How to install Lenny's Mod Loader (LML) in GTA V

A few files into your GTA V folder, about three minutes. After that, installing a mod is copying one folder into lml, and removing it is deleting that folder.

What it does

GTA V mods used to mean editing the game's archives with OpenIV, and a game update could undo the work. Lenny's Mod Loader (LML) loads mods from their own folders when the game starts, so the game's files stay as they are. Each mod is a folder inside lml with an install.xml that tells LML what is in it: new cars, replaced cars, data and text.

LiorMods mods that need it

Already have an lml folder in your GTA V folder, and version.dll and vfs.dll next to GTA5.exe? LML is installed. Skip this guide.

Install

  1. 1Download Lenny's Mod Loader from its page on LCPDFR, the GTA V mod site it is published on. If the site asks you to sign in, a free account is enough. You get a zip of about 5 MB (lml_beta_0414.zip: version 0.4, build 9692).
  2. 2Open the zip. It holds two folders, ModLoader and ModManager, and a readme.
  3. 3Open ModLoader and copy everything inside it (Ctrl+A, then Ctrl+C): version.dll, vfs.dll, five more .dll files and a folder named lml.
  4. 4Open your GTA V folder, the one with GTA5.exe (on Steam: right-click the game → Manage → Browse local files), and paste (Ctrl+V).
  5. 5That's it: LML starts by itself with the game. Your mods go into the new lml folder, each in a folder of its own.
ModManager, the other folder in the zip, is an optional app for switching mods on and off and setting their order. It can live anywhere, not in the game folder, and you don't need it to play.

Check it works

  • Your GTA V folder now has version.dll, vfs.dll and an lml folder (with a file named _MODS GO HERE inside).
  • Put a mod in lml and start the game. The game folder then has ModManager.log, with a line "Parsing installation file" for every mod LML loaded.

Uninstall

Delete the files you copied from ModLoader: version.dll, vfs.dll, EasyHookPatch.dll, ModManager.Core.dll, ModManager.NativeInterop.dll, NLog.dll and Microsoft.Extensions.FileSystemGlobbing.dll, and the lml folder with your mods. To switch LML off for a while without deleting anything, rename version.dll (for example to version.dll.off).
